$$^{69,71}$$Ga NMR has been measured in the metallic ferromagnet UGa$$_2$$. The $$T$$-dependence of the internal field at the Ga site has been determined and is found to coincide with that of the spontaneous magnetization. The electric field gradient (EFG) and transferred hyperfine coupling constant at the Ga site are found to be modified in the ferromagnetically ordered state, presumably due to a modification of the $$5f$$ electronic state caused by the ferromagnetic ordering. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $$1/T_1$$ is enhanced due to ferromagnetic fluctuations around $$T_c$$. The 5$$f$$ magnetic moments are considered to be nearly localized in UGa$$_2$$, in spite of good metallic conduction.

Multipole correlations in low-dimensional $$f$$-electron systems

Onishi, Hiroaki; Hotta, Takashi

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 75(Suppl.), p.266 - 269, 2006/08

In order to clarify multipole correlations in $$f$$-electron systems, we investigate a one-dimensional $$f$$-electron model based on a $$j$$-$$j$$ coupling scheme by exploiting a density-matrix renormalization group method. We discuss the effect of a crystalline electric field and the dependence on the change of $$f$$-electron numbers in detail.

The uranium intermetallic compounds UX$$_{3}$$ demonstrate a wide variety of magnetic properties, which depends on the strength of hybridization effect between the 5$$f$$-electron state of U atom and the $$s$$-,$$p$$-,$$d$$-electronic states of X atom. However, there are many uncertainties in the origin of these phenomena. UX$$_{3}$$ systems crystallizes in high symmetric structure, that is cubic AuCu$$_{3}$$ type. Therefore, the neutron diffraction measurement usually gives no conclusive information on the orientation of the total magnetic moment for UX$$_{3}$$ compounds because of their multi-domain structures. In this study we have succeeded to induce the anisotropic domain structure by applying the uniaxial pressure and prove the total magnetic moment of UGa$$_{3}$$ to be along the [011] axis.

Neutron scattering study on coupled multipole system

Metoki, Naoto

no journal, ,

Multipole of 4$$f$$ electrons and the coupling with magnetism play important role for the physical properties in rare earth compounds. This is widely accepted from the many examples of neutron and synchrotron radiation studies of $$f$$-electron states and the order-parameters. We need sophisticated technique with e.g. polarization analysis or representational methods which are useful even for large $$J$$ and become more and more familiar. We introduce the powerfulness of those methods with a example of our recent study on NdB$$_4$$.

Reduction of Eu$$^{3+}$$ by multiphoton excitation in alcohol solutions

no journal, ,

The photoredox reactions of lanthanides as a photochemical separative technique proposed in the 1970s are expected to be applied for recovery and recycling of rare metals and nuclear fuel reprocessing. In this study, Eu$$^{3+}$$ ions in methanol and ethanol solutions were reduced to Eu$$^{2+}$$ ions upon irradiation with nanosecond laser pulses. Eu$$^{2+}$$ was observed when the laser wavelength was tuned to f-f transition bands at 394 and 465 nm. The formation rate of Eu$$^{2+}$$ was proportional to the square of the incident laser intensity, indicating that the photoreduction is induced by a two-photon process. The efficiency of the photoreduction in ethanol was higher than that in methanol.

no journal, ,

The photochemical reactions of lanthanide and actinide ions are expected to be utilized for recovery and recycling of rare earths, and nuclear fuel reprocessing. Heading towards research for implementation of photochemical purification, a unified evaluation of the efficiency of multiphoton processes is required. In this study, we have evaluated the fluence dependence of photoreduction of Eu(III) more precisely than before by measuring the beam profile of the excitation laser. The reduction rate of Eu(III)$$rightarrow$$Eu(II) is proportional to the square of the laser fluence, indicating that the photoreduction of Eu(III) is induced by a two-photon process.
